Kerry MacKay heads to the Belize to report on sustainable scuba, marine parks and world renowned dive sites
Perhaps a lesser-known destination to UK divers these days, Belize should not be overlooked. Located in the balmy waters of the Caribbean, just below Mexico, Belize offers a tropical getaway with world-famous dive sites, delicious food, and friendly people. All with the stunning backdrop of sandy beaches, palm trees, rainforests and a vibrant history to discover.
Belize may be small, but it packs a big punch, having the world’ s second-largest barrier reef( a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the Great Blue Hole( made famous by Cousteau). Established marine reserves create hot-spots hosting big animals such as sharks, rays, turtles, manatees and whale sharks. English is the official language, and you can expect delicious food, blending flavours from the Caribbean and Mexico. The laid-back Caribbean vibe makes lounging on the beach with a colourful cocktail a dream-come-true.
