Peninsula Sub Aqua Club

With the West Cornwall coastline as their backdrop, this busy club is spoiled for choice. Interview by Kristina Pedder

Surrounded by a rugged rocky coastline and clear waters, Peninsula Sub Aqua Club is perfectly placed to benefit from the glory of Cornish diving. Much of the club’ s social life is centred on year-round diving, with the odd visit to quiz night at the pub.

Where are you based?
The club has been in West Cornwall since it was founded in 1978; we’ re right at the bottom of the country, surrounded by the most southerly and westerly points of mainland UK; the Lizard and Lands End. We are one of the clubs involved in organising Kernow Dive Fest, which once a year welcomes divers from BSAC clubs around the country for diving, fun and fundraising for the Diving Diseases Research Centre( DDRC) in Plymouth.
Who are your members?
We are really lucky to have members from across Cornwall, from all walks of life and with a diverse range of interests. Our membership has been steadily growing over recent years. Our total membership is 93, including 85 diving members, three juniors, three social members and two Ocean Diver trainees.
We have 17 Ocean Divers, 33 Sports Divers, 20 Dive Leaders, 18 Advanced Divers and one Second Class Diver. There is one First Class Diver too.
What sort of diving interests your members?
We’ re not short on members who enjoy wreck diving; we have several who are active underwater archaeologists and members of Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Maritime Archaeology Society( cismas. org. uk /), who undertake many exciting projects in Cornish waters to survey and preserve wrecks.
