UKDIVING TRAVELSPECIAL
Gorgonian fan corals at Thomas Reef damage , so I panned with my camera as he pursued me across the barge . Over postdive coffee we discussed this behaviour , and it turned out that pretty much everyone had experienced something similar . I still don ’ t know if it was one fish , or several .
My theory was that it was a male defending his territory against what biologists term ‘ cogeners ’, or fish within the same genus . Perhaps he was facing off against his reflection in my camera lens ; or perhaps it was a female defending a nest of eggs .
Leaving the mystery behind us , Scuba Scene returned to Hurghada after a final day exploring the shallow reef at Sha ’ ab el Erg . I had booked an extra day at the Marriott in order to get a cheaper flight , and enjoyed protracted farewells with my fellow divers . Of all the things diving has given me , friendship has proven the most rewarding , and the Red Sea remains a fine place to meet lovely people .
