FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 2024 DOHA Sub Aqua Club participated in the Seabed Cleaning Campaign at Porto Arabia on Pearl Islands . These are artificial islands created for residential and entertainment , spanning roughly 4 square km . It was part of a wider collaboration with various public institutions , aimed at helping raise environmental awareness and sustainability . More than 3.5 tonnes of plastic and metal waste was collected from an area spanning over 150,000 square
Hot Fuzz
SEVERAL MEMBERS OF THISTLE DIVERS took part in ‘ Movember ’, and you may think from the photographs that there weren ’ t that many participants . Unfortunately , on the night the photograph was taken , many metres , with nine of our divers helping . On the first event on 4 May last year , we had 13 divers helping to clear two tonnes of waste from a 30,000 square metre area .
While it is Doha Sub Aqua Club ’ s normal practice to clear debris during our dives ( fishing line is a particular bugbear ), it was great for the club to get involved in a large scale clean-up , helping to ensure the waters we use as a playground are kept clean . GARETH LEWIS , Doha Sub Aqua Club
of us arrived too late to be included in the photo because our trainees were waiting for their lesson !
Over the last few weeks , our male colleagues coming to our club night / dives increasingly looked like friendly werewolves . On a recent dive day at the Farne Islands , I ’ m sure I saw frost forming on some hairy-faced faces , as it was an outstandingly cold day mid-November .
Some others ( ladies included ) didn ’ t want to lose out and quickly sprouted a healthy stick-on moustache to blend in ! Luckily ours peeled off , but I know for sure that that there ’ s a definite increase in smooth faces now , as it seems no-one was in favour of keeping the extra hair .
Funds from our members were donated to the Movember Europe charity . Well done guys and others . ANNE PECK , Thistle Divers 0783
Huddersfield reunion plans
BSAC18 – HUDDERSFIELD celebrates 70 years of diving this February . Although ‘ landlocked ’ in the centre of Britain , we continue to use this to our benefit . Yes , we are not particularly close to any coast , but this means we regularly travel to all of them instead of favouring one on our doorstep – because there isn ’ t one ! Be it West Scotland , North Wales , the South Coast or the North Sea , all are regular haunts . Our 2025 calendar already has 11 planned sea trips .
At one time we owned two RIBs , but these days we prefer to support our UK dive industry and use a variety of professional charter operators , from the Isles of Scilly to Shetland . To all of those who have got us in – and out – of the water over the years , we thank you .
Some of our earlier members learned to dive using ABLJs and wetsuits . One such member we hope to get in the pool for a CCR Try Dive this year ; technology advances , but we keep on diving .
One thing that has been ever present is dive instruction , mostly at Huddersfield Leisure Centre , but also at a few different sites over the years . We still offer training and try dives on Monday evenings .
Plenty of members have come and gone over the years , so this message is to reach out to anybody with previous affiliations to our club . Please join us in Huddersfield on Saturday 22 February for a Yorkshire style celebration . Contact us on our website bsac18 . co . uk for the fine details . ALEX DIFFLEY , BSAC 18 Huddersfield
