SCUBAHUB
All the young dudes
BSAC HAS LAUNCHED A NEW ONLINE resource for clubs looking to bring more young people into diving and snorkelling .
Now live on BSAC ’ s website , the Youth Engagement Hub has been designed to support clubs in both recruiting and retaining younger members .
Embracing young divers ( aged 12 and up ) offers a range of benefits to existing members and clubs . Plus , the inclusion of younger people can be an important step toward ensuring the long-term sustainability and vitality of BSAC ’ s community of clubs .
The new Youth Engagement Hub highlights all these benefits and provides clubs with a range of resources , guides and strategies to ensure they can provide positive and enjoyable experiences for young people . There are also case studies from other clubs for inspiration .
One club , Buxton SAC , is now seeing the benefits of getting proactive in their recruitment of younger members , as the club ’ s welfare and development officer , Dawn Urwin , explains .
“ We are currently a club of 53 members , with nearly a third being junior members ( 10 – 18-year-olds ). We also have a number of 18 – 25-year-olds which makes up approximately 13 % of our club demographic .
“ This has taken a number of years to achieve and hard work , but we are reaping the rewards now in terms of the diversity of the club and longer-term sustainability and a complete family feel .”
BSAC Head of Community , Debbie Powell , said she hoped as many clubs as possible would access the support available from the Youth Engagement Hub .
“ Recruiting and engaging young divers can benefit clubs and members by revitalising energy , enabling leadership development , facilitating a learning exchange and providing a sense of contribution to the sport ’ s future . It ’ s a winwin situation for divers of all ages !”
