The Swiss-made brand Luminox has a long history with the United States Department of the Navy , going back some 30 years . Searching for a timepiece that would stand up to the challenging conditions of military operations around the world , allied with the ability to carry out night operations , Luminox ’ s LLT ( Luminox Light Technology ) evidently ticked the requisite boxes .
Unlike conventional luminescence , which requires a power source to ‘ charge ’ the hands , dial and bezel markings , Luminox ’ s self-powered system provides around-the-clock illumination via a series of micro gas sources .
Consisting of a tiny glass housing with a phosphorescent powder layer and filled with a glowing gas , this system offers outstanding illumination whether being used in the pitch black of night or in poor diving visibility .

The symbol and motto of the Navy SEALs , inscribed on the back became official watch provider for the US Navy Sea , Air and Land ( SEAL ) teams with 1994 ’ s original Luminox 3001 Navy SEAL Watch . The latest in their Navy SEAL Series , the Master Carbon SEAL ‘ No One Left Behind ’ Limited Edition , pays tribute to the motto and ethos of its military origins . Limited to 888 pieces , the 46mm watch ’ s case and bezel are manufactured from Luminox ’ s ultra-lightweight but strong CARBONEX , a material I gather is up to six times lighter than steel and three times lighter than titanium . While the watch ’ s black matte finish , brushed with contrasting gold-coloured highlights and detail may not be to everyone ’ s taste , it hit the spot as far as I was concerned . During daylight hours , all the numerals were easily visible . The constant-glow luminosity ( lasting up to 25 years ) meant a quick glance was all that was needed for a time check in low-light conditions . Individually depth-tested to 300 metres , the Master Carbon SEAL features a Swiss quartz movement , an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and a screw-down stainless-steel crown . The uni-directional rotating bezel has a reassuring click as it turns ; I found it could be operated using thick gloves with no problem at all .
While the average recreational diver is unlikely to undertake secret or perilous missions like their navy counterparts , there ’ s no doubt that this watch will do the business wherever you take it .
The gold-coloured , famous ‘ No One Left Behind ’ motto is nicely highlighted in blackout-of-gold type on the lower face , and is also inscribed in black alongside the Navy SEAL logo on the rear of the case .
The watch is fitted with a comfortable and durable rubber strap for everyday use ; I found it was long enough to be fitted over my drysuit wrist seal . If you have a dry glove system fitted or need a little extra length , then the watch ’ s longer webbing strap can be substituted . NH
