The liveaboard scene has come back to life in Egypt , but what ’ s the reality of visiting and diving there in the post-Covid era ? Simon Rogerson reports from Hurghada

Hitting the water came as a surprise . After two years of exclusively UK diving , I had grown accustomed to a cool , green welcome to the sea . So I was briefly disconcerted when I jumped into the Red Sea last October to be greeted by the warm embrace of cobalt-blue water .

I wasn ’ t quite in the vanguard of British divers to arrive at the Red Sea when things started to open up at the end of summer last year . I ’ d been waiting for that allimportant third vaccination before I dared set up a trip abroad . I had asked the team at tour operator Scuba Travel to let me know if a spot came up on one of their liveaboards , and when the opportunity arose , I was ready to go .
