As this issue went to press , Honeydew was undergoing a few renovations in dry dock , but Sarah doesn ’ t envisage radical changes . “ One of the reasons I bought her is because I loved her in her previous incarnation as the Valkyrie . So , it ’ s not as if I want to change her into something unrecognisable . That said , there will be a few touches here and there over the next couple of years . My immediate priority is to get things up and running and to ensure she ’ s in good shape to provide a safe and comfortable diving platform .”
Sarah ’ s day job is lecturer in Bioethics at the University of Edinburgh . At first , it sounds an esoteric subject area , but it touches directly on questions raised by the pandemic . “ Bio-medicine and bio-technology throw up a whole range of dilemmas ,” she says . “ The pandemic forced us to consider what kinds of public health measures are justifiable socially and ethically ; what do we do about vaccinations and ethical experiments ? How do we allocate when we have to think about stretched healthcare resources ... who gets treatment and who is de-prioritised ? Bioethics is an attempt to answer those questions and find ways to think around them .”
This is where Sarah ’ s academic and diving interests coalesce , in the areas of conservation and environmental ethics . “ We are seeing questions of environmental protection versus the need to exploit natural resources . As divers , what we really see is the impact of environmental degradation , and so the need for sustainability is really brought home when we see it at first hand . With care and attention , Scotland ’ s marine environment will be preserved for divers to enjoy for many years to come – including aboard the Honeydew .” �
