Marine UnProtected Areas

THE MARINE CONSERVATION SOCIETY ( MCS ) is calling for further protection for the UK ’ s offshore Marine Protected Areas against destructive bottom trawling .
In their newly released report , ‘ Marine unProtected Areas ’, MCS has highlighted that a ‘ worrying ’ 98 % of our offshore Marine Protected Areas – or MPAs – are suffering as a result of trawling .
Bottom trawling is a method of fishing that can damage the seabed , kill animals and plants , and release carbon from the seafloor which can enter then enter the atmosphere and contribute to climate change . Trawling is currently banned in just 5 % of all the UK ’ s MPAs , and only in sites that are less than 12 miles from the coast .

Following their year-long research , MCS is now campaigning for a full ban on bottom trawling in all of the UK ’ s MPAs to ensure these sites are given a full chance to recover .
Dr Jean-Luc Solandt , MCS ’ s specialist in Marine Protected Areas , said the damage caused to the seabed as result of trawling will leave a lasting legacy unless it is tackled .
“ Without a ban on this form of fishing , these areas of our seas simply aren ’ t recovering , and we ’ re missing a crucial opportunity to combat climate change and ensure there are , indeed , plenty more fish in the sea .”
Studies have already shown that within five years of protection , three UK and Isle of Man MPAs have been found to have larger and more diverse marine life . MCS now believe that with the new Fisheries Act 2020 , the UK Governments can act more independently in how they support the recovery of our seas , with banning of bottom trawling in all the UK ’ s MPAs now top of the MCS campaign agenda .
Coinciding with the release of their Marine UnProtected Areas report , MCS is asking for BSAC members to get involved in the call to ban bottom trawling by tweeting their local Member of Parliament .
