Celebrate in the North West
THE NORTH WEST REGIONAL TEAM ARE getting behind BSAC ’ s 70th anniversary celebrations with a one-day dive festival at Capernwray Dive Centre this September .
To be held at the popular Lancashirebased inland site on Friday , 29 September , the 70th Anniversary Dive Festival offers a packed programme , including rebreather and scooter try dives , underwater treasure hunts and quizzes . Organisers are also hoping to coordinate an underwater record attempt along the ‘ 70 ’ theme . Full details will be released shortly .
Plus , there will also be a display of the history of BSAC in the north west as well as the chance to meet with other clubs to mark 70 years of Britain ’ s biggest dive club .
BSAC North West Regional Coach , Stephen Dorricott , said he hoped as many clubs as possible would take part in the festival .
“ The aim is to get as many North West clubs as possible together and celebrate their history . It would be great for each club to bring along a small gazebo to advertise their club and put on an activity for the other clubs to participate ,” he added .
Tickets for the one-day event are £ 16 each and attendees will also need to be a member of Capernwray Dive Centre . For more information and to register your interest in attending , email Stephen at Northwest . coach @ bsac . com
Get involved in BSAC ’ s platinum year !
With BSAC counting down to its platinum anniversary on 15 October , the North West Region ’ s 70th Dive Festival is just one of the many ways BSAC members are celebrating the club ’ s milestone .
BSAC is encouraging more clubs and members to get involved by organising an event to celebrate the club ’ s big 7-0 . “ We hope in our 70th year that our clubs will celebrate with us ,” said BSAC CEO , Mary Tetley . “ You could have a big birthday bash , a fundraising event or a 70th challenge of some kind . Or it could be an already planned club event given that extra Platinum twist . Just keep us posted on your plans !” Anyone planning to organise a 70th challenge will need a potential risk assessment . For more information , please email drt @ bsac . com
Clubs can share their 70th celebration pictures or videos on your social channels using the # BSACdivers hashtag . You can also send them in directly to marketing @ bsac . com for potential inclusion in SCUBA magazine .
Clubs and members can also use the special 70th anniversary version of the BSAC logo as part of their celebrations . The 70th logo can be downloaded at bsac . com / brand
Seeding the Solent : 30,000 oysters deployed
A LARGE NUMBER OF NATIVE OYSTERS have been deployed at various sites in the Solent , following preparation work by volunteers and the BLUE Marine Foundation .
During the preparation time back in April , organisers were joined by BSAC Expedition Officer , Andy Hunt , on behalf of BSAC ’ s Operation Oyster environmental project .
Andy rolled up his sleeves and mucked in to help with the sorting , cleaning and recording of the stock of juvenile native oysters received from hatcheries around the rest of the UK .
He was in good company , as about 40 other people had volunteered to prepare approximately 30,000 native oysters ready to be placed in the sea . Several thousand oysters were processed each day over the course of a week .
Andy said the initiative showed just what could be achieved .
“ Most people get the message we need to do something to restore the planet . That ’ s not going to happen by just clicking ‘ like ’ on your social media stream but requires real time commitment and real effort . This event showed what that looked like in practice , with people from all walks of life participating ,” explained Andy .
“ We now hope to return to BLUE Marine ’ s reef restoration project in Langstone Harbour with teams of citizen science divers to support their monitoring activities of the site .”
One of the largest environmental projects ever organised by BSAC , Operation Oyster aims to engage members , divers and snorkellers in helping to rehabilitate the UK ’ s vulnerable native oyster beds . For more information on how you can get involved , go to bsac . com / operationoyster
