Your diving cylinder won’ t get filled without a valid test certificate, so to avoid disappointment make sure they’ re up to date. Otherwise, check the valve opens and closes without issue and that the O-ring is in good condition; replacing it is an inexpensive but crucial fix.
Rebreathers
Rebreather divers have a little more to contend with than the average recreational diver and therefore require a few more essential checks. Oxygen sensors have a finite lifespan. As a general rule-of-thumb, this is in the region of 18 months. However, it’ s common practice for many CCR users to replace the cells every 12 months as a matter of course.
Batteries should be replaced or recharged depending on the unit and scrubber O-rings inspected and replaced if necessary. The unit’ s buoyancy device should be examined as per the standard BCD checks above. Counterlungs, scrubber container and breathing loop require visual examination then disinfection prior to use.
First stages, hoses and bailout valve should also be checked over before fully assembling the unit with an in-date supply of scrubber material. From there it’ s a case of following the unit’ s manufacturerspecified pre-dive checks as per normal before taking the rebreather for its first outing of the year.
Happy diving
Whether you’ re a novice or highly experienced and well qualified diver, strictly air or nitrox, mixed gas or CCR, it’ s never a good idea to plunge straight in to the very limits of your experience after any type of layoff.
As with training for a marathon, start off small and build up gradually. Not only does this allow you to develop your dive fitness, but should any form of equipment niggle or malfunction occur, it’ s a lot easier to deal with in your comfort zone than when pushing the boundaries.

2 BCD

Inspect corrugated hose, dump valves / cords and inflation / deflation device. Fully inflate and conduct leak test to include over-pressure relief valve operation. Check security of cylinder cam band and integrated weight system.

3 Regulator

Annual service by certified technician, visual inspection of first and second stages, hoses, mouthpieces and accessories such as wireless transmitters.

4 Computer

Check strap security, battery condition / status and replace if indicated. If applicable download software / firmware updates.

5 Rebreather

Annual service by technician. Visual inspection of all components including first stages, hoses, scrubber container, counterlungs, convoluted hoses and relevant O-rings. Replace or recharge batteries and scrubber material.

6 Accessories

Check mask, fins and snorkel for any deterioration and replace any affected components. Inspect hood and gloves for any damage to zips and material. Check weight belt or weight system for security and ease of release. Cylinders must have a valid test certificate. Inspect O-ring and ensure valve functions smoothly. Inspect knives and cutters for corrosion and straps for damage. A visual check of SMB, reel or spool for any damage. Unwind / rewind line and lubricate mechanism.
