Do you spend a long time in the water?
I don’ t tend to time my snorkels, I just listen to my body and make sure I get out before I start feeling cold. I suspect it has probably been about 90 minutes. While I love being in the water, I am a naturally quite chilly person so I definitely don’ t push the time limit on each session.
The book has lovely photographs … any tips for snorkelling photographers?
It’ s very important to say that we can’ t take credit for all the photos in the book- so many generous and talented photographers contributed their images and gave us tips and support along the way, which we are very grateful for.
We were really new to underwater photography when we started on the book and have learned so much over the past three years but it has been a steep learning curve. I do, however, really love snorkel photography now – the light, the movement and the potential to capture that elusive great split shot is quite addictive.
For snorkel photography inspiration please take a look at two photographers who specialise in snorkelling, Jethro Haynes( jethrophoto. com) and Alison Moore( alisonmoore. co. uk). You can also explore their photography on Instagram. We met Jethro and Alison during our research trips and both take absolutely wonderful shots, most of which are captured while snorkelling.
Go on, we have to ask … where is Britain’ s greatest snorkelling spot?
I think we will need to go for a top three as we can’ t agree on one as a family. My favourite snorkel was at Churchill Barrier Number 2 in Orkney, which is home to a mind-blowing array of interesting historical wreckage. I was lucky enough to be there on a day of blue

sky, flat sea and great visibility and it was a really special experience. Gordon would probably pick Stackpole Quay in Pembrokeshire- great snorkelling and just a wonderful place to spend the day. The kids’ choice is Lamorna Cove in Cornwall, which is also close to my heart as it was where I did my first ever open water dive back in 1992.
