Blue skies and pale sands of Great Bay
What’ s the attraction of snorkelling over other watersports?
We have tried most watersports but snorkelling is the one we love most right now. For me the simplicity, freedom and connection with nature make it perfect. It is complete escapism and you can easily fit it into a family holiday, or a day at the beach with friends. All you need are a few pieces of equipment and some basic training.
Which parts of the UK are the most popular for snorkellers?
The South West of England is probably the most popular as it has so many beautiful, accessible beaches and the visibility is generally good but writing this book has opened my eyes to the fact that there are so many other great places around our coastline waiting to be explored.

Clear water at Camasdurach, Scotland information. This planted the seed that perhaps there was a gap in the market for a book with tips on top British snorkel sites- fast forward six months and we had pulled together a proposal and were so excited when Wild Things Publishing said‘ Yes’.
How did you carry out your research?
There were lots of weekends away and often plans were decided at the last minute due to trying to catch the best weather windows. We also did some longer trips- two summers in Scotland and one in Wales. The team was myself and Gordon, joined for most trips by our children, now 11 and 13. We also invariably had our dog Holly in tow; she was always very keen and tried to get into all of the photos.
