Trip to Truk , 2014 and Binnendijk ; all out of Portland . We also do some reef and scenic dives , including the Bembridge Ledges , Lulworth Banks and scenic dives around Portland . We always start the season off with an Easter trip to Portland .
In 2022 , we have longer charter boat trips planned in Oban in May and Dieppe in July , plus a trip to the Red Sea in August . In total we have 10 trips organised this year . In normal ( non Covid ) times we ’ d aim to go to Chuuk Lagoon every two years . And there ’ s always inland training sites such as Stoney Cove , which we aim to do every two to three weeks in the summer .
And on the technical front ?
Our technical divers use the RIB for some deeper trips such as the Salsette ( 50m ) but most 40 + m dives , such as the Moldavia ( 37-50m ) and Marga ( 38-50m ), are from charter boats at many locations including Portsmouth , Lymington , Eastbourne , Brighton , Weymouth and Newquay . We are planning to do some of the deeper stuff west of Portland in the near future .
But please note that at Luton BSAC we welcome rebreather divers on ALL club dives , not just deeper dives . If you are interested in using a rebreather then come down to our club night and have a chat with us . Members have been using rebreathers for 11 years + and are always happy to give advice . We also run rebreather try dives in the pool for members .
Tell us a bit more about the technical section …
There are 20 rebreather divers among our members . We reckon few clubs have such an active technical diving membership . Even fewer have an oxygen-clean compressor with a nitrox and trimix blending panel . Luton BSAC is proud to have both ; and to actively promote technical diving safety among its members . Many technical diving members use rebreathers , including AP-Diving , JJ- CCR and Megladon units , however some use open circuit trimix .
What ’ s in store for the future ?
Future plans are to engage more with the local community and , for example , carry out try dives and training for local youth groups such as Scouts and Sea Cadets . We don ’ t have very much engagement with the wider BSAC at the moment , which is something we ’ d like to change for the future . We ’ d like to train our instructors in more Skill Development Courses . The contacts we do have with BSAC HQ have always been very helpful : there is a great team running things .
