UKDIVING of slack water . Fortunately for us , tides are relatively predictable and the weather was generally mild for the time of year .
We launched and recovered our RIBs each day from the slipway at Puffin Dive Centre in Oban
( www . puffin . org . uk ). Boat launching or shore entry for divers is free if you use their other facilities . These include a self-service breathing air compressor ( coin or token operated ) and a well-stocked shop with plenty of spares , kit , and souvenirs . Sadly , recent storm damage had ripped the roof from the block of toilets and changing rooms . However , they were still able to offer some minimal shelter , as well as benches for changing out of the wind .
On one memorable and sunny day , we were delighted to be able to free the umbilical of a yachter ’ s ROV ( Remotely Operated Vehicle , essentially a tethered underwater drone ), which had become snagged on the bow section of the Breda . They were grateful for our assistance on what could otherwise have been a very costly day out to play with their shiny new toy ! On another day , the dive team were even joined by ‘ Toby ’ the seal from the colony on Calve Island , who dived down to see us at 30 + metres and stayed with us throughout the whole dive .
