Million Mile Clean
TIME TO COME CLEAN - 40 BSAC CLUBS have registered their underwater cleanups in the new Million Mile Clean campaign since its recent launch , exceeding organiser expectations .
Last month , BSAC announced its role in the campaign lead by Surfers Against Sewage ( SAS ) by extending the initiative to underwater litter collection . Based on its record-breaking launch , SAS is expecting this to be the biggest and most impactful clean-up event it has ever organised .
The campaign aims to mobilise the public to collectively remove litter from one million miles of land , rivers and coasts throughout the UK . It is estimated that around 80 % of marine debris makes its way to the ocean from land and river environments .
One of the first BSAC clubs to register was BSAC Tabuk 1011 , based in Haql , Saudi Arabia . Nine BSAC members and their families have already dipped below the surface on a registered clean , all motivated to help protect a favourite dive site . Paul Ward , an Open Water Instructor and Advanced Diver from BSAC Tubuk 1011 , was keen to get involved and do something worthwhile for his local area . He said : “ We all enjoyed doing something so positive . We collected one sack of plastic rubbish , mostly old plastic water bottles , one green plastic shoe , a few straws and one Lego Brick aptly found by
Sophie , our youngest diver who also qualified on the day !”
