The Odyssey in action
While full face masks( FFMs) are primarily used for commercial diving, they have a number of advantages that can be of benefit to recreational divers too.
If you suffer from jaw issues such as fatigue or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder( TMD) then dispensing with the requirement to clamp a regulator between the teeth will certainly help alleviate your condition when diving.
Equally, for anyone with a facial injury or skin condition requiring the area to be kept dry, then a FFM provides a welcome solution. While the average recreational diver is unlikely to be spending their dive in contaminated water, this type of mask will also safeguard against possible infection.
A wide angle of view is one of the major pros regarding FFMs, as is the ability to attach communication devices in order to make contact with the surface. Mounting lights and other accessories is also a plus. Of course, there are some downsides compared to the everyday standard mask. Cost is a major consideration and there may also be a slight change in buoyancy. Bailout solutions may differ from the norm and suitable training is a must.
I’ ve used several different FFMs over the years, particularly when I’ ve been involved in filming projects when communication with the surface is a vital component.
Northern Diver’ s Odyssey full face mask is designed, developed and manufactured in the UK to the exacting standards of MoD and commercial needs. If you think that means it’ s going to built like a tank and practically the size of one, think again.
Stats and straps
The reinforced high-impact nylon frame and high-grade, impact-resistant polycarbonate lens are tough, but lightweight with it. The skirt, made from soft, hypoallergenic silicone is a little thicker than the average mask, but just as comfortable and easily moulds to the diver’ s facial contours.
