Positivity and investing in future diving generations has proven a winning formula for Mercian Divers. Interview by Kristina Pedder

Mercian Divers, now a bustling West Midlands BSAC club, was one of the first to join the Sub Aqua Association back in the early days of sport diving. Over the years the club grew and did plenty of diving with a purpose but in the 1990s membership dropped below 10. In 2010, the club took the decision to join BSAC as branch 2463.

What were the club’ s early days like?
Mercian Divers was founded in 1974 in Kidderminster. The club moved to Bromsgrove and was one of the first to join the Sub Aqua Association. Training took place in local quarries Stoney Cove or Dosthill. The club also frequently dived at Warwick Castle for the Earl of Warwick and recovered some artifacts from the river, under the weir or in the castle well, including musket balls, a brass pump and a grappling iron.
On one annual trip to Lamorna Cove in Cornwall, an old cannon was lifted from the Eastern Point area of the bay, transported to Stoney Cove and placed on the far side of the Galleon, where it still resides.
