I

’ m sure many SCUBA readers have been on liveaboards to the Red Sea , but I thought it worth writing about BSAC ’ s own Red Sea trips . This Easter saw my second northern Egypt wrecks and reefs tour , one of 10 BSAC charters planned for this year .
Depending on numbers , BSAC is currently using the liveaboards Majestic , good for 28 or so guests or Hero , a slightly smaller boat , taking 22 . Our partners at BSAC Egypt have been key to this process , helping select appropriate boats , co-ordinating transfers , accommodation , visas and equipment ( you can hire everything and travel with just a cabin bag if you wish ).
Prices are £ 950 for the week and include nitrox , transfers , visas and beer / wine on board . BSAC also offers free training for those that want to move forward with their training from qualified BSAC instructors . It ’ s a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills in amazing conditions , with warm water and great viz . Extras ( to be paid additionally ) are your flights ; any additional equipment hire ( such as a 15 litre cylinder , should you need it ) and tips for the crew , usually around € 90 per person .
The BSAC instructors on board can teach all diver grades , from absolute beginners through to Advanced Diver , but how much we can cover depends on demand .
There are basically two itineraries , either
North – wrecks , such as the SS Thistlegorm and reefs running out of Hurghada up to the Sinai Peninsula , or South – mainly visiting famous offshore reefs such as Elphinstone or Daedalus .
Early start
On this trip we had three dive guides and three BSAC instructors on board . We planned the training requirements some time in advance to ensure the best use of our resources . Of the 24 divers , 14 opted to have some form of training , while the others just got on and enjoyed their diving .
To get a head start with some of the trainees , we arrived in Egypt early and
