Poseidon ’ s quest continues

( after roadworks )

THE FINAL BSAC AND POSEIDON CCR try dive event of the year saw 18 rebreather-curious members take to the water at Capernwray to discover more about bubble-free diving .
Having been rescheduled to a later date due to roadworks on the M6 , the Capernwray event was eventually delivered over a weekend in late October .
With nine try dive sessions a day under the watchful eye of lead instructor Colin Rotheram , from Quantumdiver , participants were taken through a full introduction of the CCR kit before getting to try the Poseidon units out under the water . Clubs taking advantage of the weekend at the Lancashire inland site included Merseyside BSAC and Guisley SAC .
The Capernwray event was one of two CCR try dive events to be held this year . Colin said the final event of 2022 proved to be a great success , despite the rain .
“ The weekend went extremely well ; there were lots of questions and the interest level on both days was high . Some of the attendees are now considering their options around the use of rebreathers .”
Following the success of 2022 , more Poseidon CCR events are now in the pipeline for 2023 . Full details of dates and locations will be released in due course .
Close out 2022 with some wise words from your NDO , Dai Atkins
IT ’ S BEEN PLEASING TO LEARN WE HAVE surpassed the number of Open Water Instructors certified three years ago , reaching 205 so far this year ( 193 in 2019 ). A big thank you to all who put themselves forward to help train your fellow club members and help restrengthen the knowledge base . Instructor training events are now live for 2023 and all the information you need to book is at bsac . com / its
You get to meet a lot of interesting and fun characters through diving – in particular as an instructor , which can be extremely rewarding as you help people develop new skills . You get to learn a lot about yourself at the same time . You become more enlightened , and you never stop learning . It ’ s also a nice reminder that your efforts have been useful , when you hear about people continuing their own development . I just can ’ t believe it has taken Tash Scott so long to get onto using mixed gas ! [ See Learning Curve , December 2022 ].
Everyone has their quirks . Having heard our club trip to Norway on MV Clasina earlier this year was timed shortly after a visit by Alex ‘ Woz ’ Warzynski [ See Norwegian blues , this issue ], I spent extra time checking the bunks for ripe socks .
It ’ s people that make BSAC what it is – and from the Dive with … columns penned so far ; we ’ ve barely scratched the surface . In the coming months as well , in addition to the new faces on NDC , you ’ ll be hearing from some of the staff at HQ who support your activities , and some of our volunteer Council members as we share the love !
All that remains is to wish all of you , your families and your clubs a happy and relaxing Christmas holiday ! Nadolig Llawen a Blwydden Newydd dda ! [ Google it – Cymraeg Editor ]
