From the Lakes to the Legends
Veteran BSAC diver John Adams joins fellow Lunesdale SAC members to rediscover the Red Sea liveaboard experience
Turkish Airlines , I love you . If ever an airline could change one ’ s hopes and expectations of getting a seat or even the aircraft existing , it ’ s you . After being subjected to flight cancellations , changes , further last-minute cancellations and then a two-hour delay , we eventually headed out of Manchester to Hurghada via Istanbul . Why fly Turkish Airlines ? 30kg of hold luggage , 8kg hand luggage and an upgrade to business on the return journey gets my vote !
Lunesdale club ’ s usual training area encompasses Capernwray and lakes such as Coniston or Wastwater , so a Red Sea liveaboard makes a very welcome change . With a small club of around 30 divers , individual members take on the responsibility for planning various trips and events .
Club member Debbie Willan planned this trip on liveaboard MV Legends , for late 2019 . Covid changed everything . A two-year postponement due to lockdown , the company being sold to new owners , changes to the Lunesdale dive team though illness , effects from the war in Ukraine and Turkish airlines changing flight schedules all made her task a lot more complicated . The fact that this trip went ahead with few hitches is a credit to her .
Many Red Sea boats never made it through lockdown . Hurghada is mainly reliant on diver tourism and , when divers stop coming , boat owners run out of funds quickly .
