Berthing the RIBs, Fox and Vixen
Where are you based?
Weekly club nights take place during term time at Lutterworth Leisure Centre in southern Leicestershire, but our members come from across Leicestershire and neighbouring counties.
How many members are there?
We have around 20 members whom we see pretty regularly on club trips and club meetings. Others attend less regularly. We have managed to add to our membership this past year. We are always looking to continue this growth and to grow the core group of members who run the unit activities.
Who are your members?
Our members are also members of the UK Scouting community. Some of us are leaders of other Scouting groups, but for some LSSAU is their only link to Scouting. We have a mix of instructors and divers, young and old. At present we have 15 Ocean Divers, six Sports Divers, seven Dive Leaders, three Advanced Divers and a First Class Diver. Two National Instructors occasionally visit the unit and are regularly available for advice and guidance.
How do Scouts find the club?
We provide try dive and snorkelling sessions for Scouts, with occasional leaders joining in. In the year to September 2025, we delivered 78 scuba try dives and 113‘ experience snorkelling’ sessions. Scouts can achieve their water activities badge by doing the try dive or completing the
Dolphin Snorkel course. Some Scouts also use the Ocean Diver course toward their Duke of Edinburgh awards.
How do you manage to run the unit without charging your under-18s a club levy?
We receive grants through our affiliation to Scouting to help us keep costs low for our new members and ensure we can provide training to a wider range of people. The adults’ annual club fees are put towards the upkeep of club equipment, pool fees and other club costs.
What facilities does the club provide?
The club meets for training and diving chat before heading to the weekly hour in the pool. Members have access to a
