Youngest legit Thistlegorm diver?
YOUNG DIVER ABE MCCARTHY FROM Flintshire Sub Aqua Club( FSAC) has recently equalled the record as the youngest known diver to explore the legendary SS Thistlegorm shipwreck in the Red Sea, having dived this iconic wreck with the expert guidance of Gwyn Evans( G) from Elite Diving in October 2025.
At just 15 years old, Abe displayed remarkable confidence and composure throughout the dives, handling one of the world’ s most iconic wrecks with maturity and respect well beyond his years.
The Thistlegorm, with its rich wartime history and sometimes challenging conditions, is a dive that commands admiration from even the most seasoned underwater explorers— making Abe’ s accomplishment especially noteworthy.
Adding a touch of character to an already memorable adventure, Abe serenaded fellow divers post-dive with his acoustic guitar, creating a moment of camaraderie and celebration that perfectly captured the
spirit of the diving community.
This achievement is not only a personal milestone for Abe but also a shining example of the passion, skill, and joy that BSAC training helps instil in young divers.
