Emily Strain – Assistant Instructor at 16
SOLWAY SAC MEMBER EMILY STRAIN , who recently turned 16 , has become one of the youngest BSAC assistant scuba diving instructors in the UK .
Emily achieved her Assistant Diving Instructor qualification after completing the Instructor Foundation Course ( IFC ).
Currently studying for her GCSEs at West Lakes Academy in Egremont , Cumbria , Emily hopes that her passion for diving , combined with her academic studies , will pave the way for her to pursue marine sciences as a career .
Meanwhile , she is focusing on supporting her club ’ s instructor team .
As an Assistant Diving Instructor , Emily can now assist in pool training as well as in sheltered open water sites such as Wasdale , under the supervision of experienced instructors . Once 18 , she will be able to progress to an Open Water Instructor . Meanwhile , she will assist her club in the
training of new divers . Emily said she was delighted to be able to help out with Solent SAC ’ s diver training .
“ Being such a young assistant instructor is pretty cool . I help in the pool with instructing and sometimes get put with the younger ones ,” she explained . “ I ’ m also the youth representative for our club , which is good as I can relate to them . Hopefully , when I ’ m 18 I can progress to OWI .”
Emily , whose father Ben is Diving Officer at Solent SAC , started her diving journey at age 12 . She particularly enjoys exploring dive sites across northern UK , including wrecks off the west coast of Scotland . She has also dived with seals at the Farne Islands , and frequently trains at Capernwray .
Andrew Brach , Secretary of the Solway Sub-Aqua Club , said : “ Having Emily as an assistant instructor will be a massive advantage to the club . The more students can identify with their instructors , the more they will benefit from their sessions . It would be wonderful to see more young people learn to dive . Emily , already the Youth Officer on our committee , represents a great asset in helping to broaden our appeal .”

Visit Malta can support its diving visitors .
“ We have worked with BSAC for many years pre-Covid to promote Malta as an alternative dive destination and it was always very fruitful for us . In this postpandemic world , we were keen to reignite our relationship and continue to promote Malta as a premier diving destination .
The experience at Putney was great , we were looked after and felt safe in the hands of the experts . We ’ re looking forward to advancing our diving skills more !”
Putney SAC Chair Jack Moore said the evening was enjoyable for everyone involved .
“ Lindsey and Tolene were very enthusiastic and quickly picked it up . They both had great buoyancy , and by the end of the session they were even doing somersaults !
“ Hopefully the experience has given them a better appreciation of scuba diving so they can encourage others visiting Malta to give it a try .”
