Instructor Training Group Lead Pete Bicheno wants to engage resting instructors
ONE OF THE BIGGEST BENEFITS OF BSAC membership is the large number of highquality instructors giving excellent training to our branch members . Every one of these instructors have had all or some of their training as instructors provided through the Instructor Training Scheme . This training meets , and often exceeds , international standards .
We have highly trained Instructor Trainers led by highly trained National Instructors . Above this all sits members of The National Diving Council , the advisory body to BSAC and the National Diving Officer . And in true club fashion , we all do this for free .
Why mention this ? I think it is often forgotten how much time and effort BSAC members put in to ensuring our club can retain its place of excellence . Often without the thanks they deserve . One who stands out from the past Is Lizzie Bird .
Lizzie comes to mind as a recent article in SCUBA was , sadly , her husband Jack ’ s obituary , which she wrote herself . Lizzie excelled as our first female National Diving Officer . At the time BSAC was going through a major financial crisis . Many people contributed to saving BSAC , but Lizzie stood out for producing a new training scheme , including being one of the major writers of the latest iteration of the Diving Manual . Sales of that book helped in part to provide the funding that saved BSAC financially . An incredible effort and so Lizzie , and all our other incredible volunteers over the years , I thank you on our behalf .
But I want more . We need Advanced Instructors , Instructor Trainers and National Instructors . Can you progress ? Retired from the Instructor Training Scheme ? You ’ re needed . It ’ s hard work but the look in the eyes of a trainee ’ s lightbulb moment makes it all worthwhile . Your branch , club and you all benefit . Come on , don ’ t be shy .
