The A20 ‘ Strawberry Roan ’ just off Loloata island
Nudibranch in Bootless Inlet the Strawberry Roan . He retold the story of how she was ditched due to a friendly fire near the wreckage of SS Pruth on the barrier reef . It ’ s worth noting that the wall near this wreck also boasts a very healthy and colourful coral reef .
The abundance of aircraft wrecks near the capital is no coincidence , as the air strip is so close . Parking sites for B17 bombers can still be seen on satellite images , clearly
within the airport ’ s boundary . For those who prefer to explore the history of these aircrafts without getting wet , there ’ s also several aircraft on display outside the National Museum and Art Gallery .
The most famous of POM ’ s wrecks is arguably the MacDhui , an Australian cargo ship ; her final moments were filmed during a Japanese bombardment in June of 1942 , and the footage can be viewed on YouTube .
The wreckage lies in Fairfax Harbour , where visibility is generally poor compared to other sites further away from land . Still , the wreck ’ s remains only lie at 15m , and various structures actually protrude out of the water at low tide . One of the masts was salvaged and now serves as a flag pole in the yacht club . It is just one of a myriad fragments of history that make exploring these waters so very satisfying .
