TOP DIVE RESORTS 08 A pink salt flat with white salt cones against a pure blue sky © 123RF/Gary Tognoni CAPTAIN DON’S HABITAT While excellent diving is happening mainly on the western, leeward side of the island, world-class windsurfing is available on the windward side at Lac Bay in Sorobon. The water is shallow and warm and there is a beautiful beach. With steady onshore trade winds, conditions are perfect for every skill level, and freestylers from around the world return each year to train for the annual pro tours. Bonaire is one of the few global breeding grounds for flamingos Founded in 1976 by the late underwater environmentalist Captain Don Stewart, Captain Don’s is all about diving and the environment. From the lowimpact building methods in the variety of accommodations, both beachfront and tranquil garden, to solar heaters and a modern waste-water treatment system, they impose the least possible impact on the environment. Iguanas, lizards, over 50 species of birds and many indigenous and imported plants and trees are in the grounds. The PADI resort has three one-tank boat departures daily to over 70 moored sites. Total diving freedom has always been the concept at Captain Don’s Habitat, meaning 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The house reef is wonderful and accessible from the diversonly jetty. Following accepted safe diving practices, you can grab a tank and go whenever you want. www.habitatbonaire.com © Gill McDonald WINDSURFING
