14 PRO SCHOOL OF SWEETLIPS Spend a couple of minutes watching the fish from a distance to see how they form up. With initial camera settings at f/8 and 1/125s, ISO100–200, slowly move in and begin shooting at a slightly upward angle. Review and adjust your settings every few shots. Control your breathing so that you don’t exhale all at once. If you’re quiet, the fish may tolerate you at extremely close range. Once you’re close, make only small moves to adjust for composition, and wait for eye contact. SPLIT SHOTS Use a large, polished dome port, and a very wide lens. Strobes can be helpful to light the underwater portion of the scene, but it’s easier to work in shallow water on sunny days to minimise the contrast ratio above and below. Calm water is essential. Focus on the farthest point you can see underwater, put the camera in motor drive, and shoot at f/16 or smaller to get acceptable depth of field topside. Start with a shutter speed of 1/125s, and adjust ISO as needed.
