South Bay Scuba ’ s Grand Day Out has been the annual highlight of the Yorkshire club ’ s calendar for the last ten years . Libby Daly reports
Our club ’ s annual celebratory event takes the form of a day of diving on the club ’ s hardboat , Condor , and our RIB , Booom , followed by a barbeque and fundraising event in the evening . Diving friends from all over the UK are invited , bringing with them cameras , boats , good humour and a wealth of experience .
The Grand Day Out 2024 took place in mid- August , diving out of Scarborough Harbour . Preparation began months in advance , with scheduled maintenance to Condor giving way to unexpected and expensive repair jobs . This included an urgent repair to the stern and lift , which had been damaged in a winter storm when a cleat got caught in a chain , pulling part of the stern away . The gearbox was fully serviced , the gearbox oil replaced ; new kitting-up benches and handrails were installed .
The grand plan for 2024 ’ s Grand Day Out was for 11 divers , diving from Booom and Condor , to conduct Seasearch dives on two of the scenic sites that were last dived as part of the Real Reefs project in 2012 , and one wreck site , more of which later . Photos of the sites would be taken , and Seasearch Observer forms completed , so that any changes in the sites over the past 12 years could be noted . No Seasearch dives have been conducted on these sites since 2012 , and both are classified by Seasearch as ‘ important sites to revisit ’ for that reason .
