Dinner à Deux
A pair of harlequin shrimp , Hymenocera elegans , chow down on the arm of a red starfish on a reef wall off east Bali . They are diminutive creatures , typically no longer than 5cm , but in their world they are voracious predators of starfish . Their skill lies in flipping a starfish onto its back and eating the tube feet , working their way along the leg until they reach the central disc . Sometimes the starfish will shed the arm that the shrimp attacked and regrow it , though usually it is too wounded to regrow . Photo by Simon Rogerson
