Diving and Training Advisor Julia Branagan looks forward to more training opportunities
IT WAS 40 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK ( according to my original blue logbook ) I completed my Swimming Test at the University of London ( ULSAC ). Little did I know then how big a part diving would play in my life , nor how much of my waking hours would be spent underwater . I was hooked , and still am , by the feeling of peace and tranquillity ; the reassuring sound of air flowing through the regulator . Nor did I foresee working at BSAC HQ .
Despite the at times awful weather , the year has seen an increase in the numbers of events being managed by our team of regional coaches - a big thank you to them all for their dedication - and I ’ m pleased to say a resurgence in university branches .
This is not without challenge : we have seen an increase in demand for diver training days , as well as the more traditional SDCs , alongside in-branch activity to help members achieve their next diver grades . The Programme of Events ( POE ) for 2024 is now live , I recommend you take a look and make the most of what ’ s on offer .
Last month I attended the 70th celebration event in Capernwray , organised by Stephen Dorricott , NW Regional Coach . There were a number of organised activities , including try dives as well as underwater photography , but the main purpose of the day was to get branches from across the region together , interacting and doing what we all love , diving ! I even got my first taste of diving with a CCR .
It was an outstanding success , such that a repeat is planned for 2024 . A massive thank you to everyone involved in organising and running the event . If other branches / regions are interested in similar days , or there are courses you would like to see added to the POE - bsac . com / events - please let us know .
