SCUBA December 2021 Issue 121 | Page 3

Welcome

Hello and welcome to the second 10-year anniversary issue of SCUBA . As I mentioned last issue , we have staggered our celebrations over two months , in order to encompass both a digital and printed magazine . Thanks for all the positive feedback after November ’ s first part of the anniversary special ; now I hope to see you through the encroaching winter with more great reads .
You ’ ll find this is pretty much a normal SCUBA with all your favourite sections . But around the point where the normal issue would peter out , I have added a bonus magazine of past features , the SCUBA Selection . As I mention elsewhere , this is by no means a ‘ best of ’ SCUBA , more a way of charting the magazine ’ s changes over the years .
Why does SCUBA change ? Your feedback informs the continual refinements that help keep us on top of our game . Whether focussed through BSAC ’ s surveys , or delivered to me in person , every bit of feedback affects our outlook and approach .
For instance , back when the magazine was in its infancy , it was over-fussy in its design , with lots of weird boxes and jaunty angles . It may have been fine for the designer ’ s other jobs , but for BSAC members clarity and elegance are the prerequisites . Well , that ’ s my belief anyway ... and it only took a few years of pitched battles and alienated colleagues before things turned my way .
Today the magazine has a roster of excellent designers , led by the talented Paul Hanson , a hugely experienced magazine professional who has been working on SCUBA since the move to a new publisher , In2 Publishing , at the beginning of the pandemic . Designers are most often the unsung heroes of magazine production , and I am hugely grateful for the creativity and confidence Paul ’ s designs have brought to this magazine .
You can trace the evolving design of SCUBA by leafing through our Selection . But most of all you will ( hopefully ) enjoy great stories by the best writers and photographers in our field . Thanks for reading , and have a great month .
