Built in 1914 , by 1919 they were at the bottom of the sea . This is a short lifespan for ships that required significant government expenditure to conceive and build . Each twist of their brief lives left a mark that can be seen on the seabed today .
To further understand the wreckage , we need to understand the events of time . This chronology is a story of three chapters , which all shape the wrecks in different ways .
INTERNMENT Bear in mind that the ships were initially interred in Scapa Flow and swung round an anchor , waiting for news of the armistice negotiation . The breach blocks and shells were left in Germany so that the guns could not be fired : there is no live ammunition on the seabed around these wrecks . They were sunk , scuttled by the crews themselves and therefore are undamaged by battle . Contrast this
