Million Mile target reached on beach
SURFERS AGAINST SEWAGE ’ S BSACsupported campaign to clean up one million miles of plastic pollution has reached its ambitious milestone , just six months after launching the initiative .
Cornwall ’ s Perranporth beach was the venue for the one-millionth mile of beach , street , river and mountain cleaning , coordinated by the environment charity . And the Perranporth clean-up on 3 October meant that the Surfers Against Sewage ( SAS ) campaign achieved its millionth mile two months ahead of schedule .
The Million Mile Clean campaign has seen volunteers around the UK galvanised to help tackle the problem of plastic in our environment . And many BSAC members and clubs have been directly involved in an initiative that has seen 1,011,237 miles cleaned .
More than 128,300 volunteers collected a grand total of 320,862kg of rubbish during the campaign . The impact of the Covid pandemic also meant the initiative has been able to focus on mental and physical wellbeing by supporting people to reconnect with their blue and green spaces .
Hugo Tagholm , Chief Executive of Surfers Against Sewage , said the response to the Million Mile Clean has been remarkable .
“ Despite the restrictions and uncertainty still in place throughout 2021 , we have been blown away by the response from communities across the UK . Through the Million Mile Clean , we have empowered an army of Ocean activists like never before .” BSAC CEO Mary Tetley said she was delighted by the campaign ’ s success and hoped members would keep cleaning .
“ BSAC members really stepped up to support this vital initiative and have played a key role in collecting so much plastic pollution in such a short time . Reaching that one millionth milestone is incredible and shows just how much we all love our oceans and environment .
“ And there is still the opportunity to keep this momentum going and ensure that the need to better protect our seas is at the forefront of everything we do .”
