Search for climate resistant coral
Conservation and science should focus on the world’ s most resilient reefs, according to a strategy announced by the Wildlife Conservation Society( WCS). The US-based group has identified areas where what it calls High Integrity Climate-Resilient Coral Reefs has survived the severe bleaching events of recent years.“ The world has likely already crossed 1.5 ° C of global warming and coral reefs are at a tipping point,” said Dr Stacy Jupiter, executive director of WCS’ s Global Marine Programme.“ Some coral reefs are defying the odds and have the ability to survive and fight back against the impacts of climate change – if we find them and protect them. This strategy is our commitment to act on that evidence.
Silver salvors in Florida
Divers from a shipwreck salvage company have uncovered more than 1,000 silver coins and gold artifacts off the coast of Florida. The Smithsonian magazine has reported that the recovered treasure was 1,051 silver coins known as reales, plus five gold escudos. Many of the coins still have mint marks and dates, revealing they were made in Spanish colonies in Mexico,
Peru and Bolivia. The find was made from a centuries-old Spanish wreck found off Florida’ s east coast. The company that made the discovery is‘ 1715 Fleet
– Queen’ s Jewels’, named after a loss of several Spanish ships in a hurricane. The coins will be restored and protected before going on public display at local museums in Florida. Over the years, millions of dollars in gold coins from the
1715 Fleet have been recovered by salvagers and treasure hunters in a coastal area stretching along 50 miles of coast from Melbourne to Fort Pierce.
