Marg Baldwin ’ s hopes for latest retirement attempt
STONEY COVE ’ S MARG BALDWIN HAS stepped down from her role as its lead BSAC Instructor , 20 years after her initial plans to retire from the Leicestershirebased inland dive site .
Marg , who is also BSAC ’ s local organiser for Instructor Training Events at Stoney Cove , originally took early retirement from the civil service to work as the inland site ’ s operation manager . She left 12 years later to go travelling , only to return . After four attempts , Marg has now finally retired from the centre . This time she says it ’ s “ for real ”, as she is relocating to Scotland .
“ After each retirement I have gone travelling – then like a boomerang I would come back . It would usually happen with me diving at Stoney Cove , being asked if I could just do X or Y and then I say ‘ yes ’,” Marg explained . “ This time will be different as I am moving away permanently , and it is the right time .”
Wishing her well in her new adventure , Stoney Cove ’ s Director , Matt King , said that Marg was an ‘ unsung hero ’ of the diving industry .
“ Marg has been instrumental in work that has made both our site and sport safer and more enjoyable . From mentoring and instructing , to overseeing innovative projects such as Stanegarth , we owe who we are today not just as a business but as individuals to Marg .
“ We wish her every happiness in Scotland , and I am already looking forward to my first visit to be greeted with the unforgettable enthusiasm that she brings to everything she does .”
Reflecting on her time at Stoney Cove , Marg said she was grateful for the people she has met and the opportunities she has been given .
“ I still see people I taught to dive 45 years ago ; they too are still diving . I have taught sons , daughters , and grandchildren of my early students . And it is great to see people snorkelling and diving as families .
“ I know there are plans for future developments at Stoney Cove and there is a great team working there to take them forward . It has been a privilege to work with all of them .”
A BSAC National Instructor and Snorkel Instructor Trainer , Marg has also served as BSAC ’ s Snorkelling Instructor Chief Examiner as well as national advisor for snorkelling with the Scouts .
BSAC ’ s Head of Diving and Training , Dom Robinson , said that Marg would be sorely missed .
“ Her contribution over many years has been nothing short of phenomenal , and during which time she has been directly responsible for lots of people gaining instructor , and other qualifications . On all their behalf I ’ d like to thank Marg and wish her the best for retirement ( again !).”
