Jaws in Cleethorpes
FOR THOSE WHO DON ’ T KNOW , JAWS in the Water is an unusual screening of the classic shark movie that takes place over water , with the audience bobbing on inflated inner tubes . When the local promoter of this show asked Grimsby & Cleethorpes BSAC for some help with the production , our members jumped at the opportunity to enhance the experience with some scuba magic .
The screening took place last October at Cleethorpes Leisure Centre . There was even a pre-recorded video introduction from Richard Dreyfuss , who played marine biologist Matt Hooper in the 1975 film . The audience was encouraged to take to the water on inflatable seats to experience a live , interactive experience while watching the film .
As the audience watched the movie , some sequences were acted out in the pool to great effect . Remember that bit in the original where a boy swims out on an inflatable ? G & C member Max Rodger did the same on a lilo , and just like his filmic counterpart , he was dragged underwater . In our version , I was waiting underwater with an alternate source , and we were able to swim to the far side of the pool without the audience noticing .
Pictured left to right are Paul Boyen , Lars Boyen , Peter Rodger and Max Rodger
Two other members , Paul and Lars Boyen , released a red chemical into streams of air from their regulators , creating a plume of red bubbles . Of course , Max didn ’ t return to the surface , and the audience were left wondering how the magic was done .
Post-show feedback from the audience was superb . It was great to be asked to assist in this event and we all agreed we would love to have a second bite at Jaws in the Water . PETER RODGER , Grimsby and Cleethorpes BSAC No 37
Top hat for urchin
DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THAT PHOTOGRAPH OF A seahorse drifting along , attached to a cotton bud ? It was a dramatic image of pollution of the sea , at a relatable level . Here ’ s my own contribution to the genre ... On a recent trip on the liveaboard Blue Adventurer I came across this sea urchin wearing what appears to be a plastic bottle top , like a little top hat . The dive site was Gota Abu Ramada . Normally they seem to accumulate bits of seaweed . I thought SCUBA readers might find this of interest - has anyone else photographed a similarly unnatural pairing ? GRAHAM ILLING , Cheshire
