u SB Who are your art heroes? Ian: Mark Rothko, John Piper,
Eric Ravilious, Barbara Hepworth, Joan Miro, Hap Grieshaber,
Bernd and Hilla Becher, Alexander Calder. u SB Who are your
illustration heroes? Ian: Jim Flora, Robert Stewart, Saul Steinberg.
u SB What kind of music do you like? Ian: Some potentially
embarrassing inclusions; Beck, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Gary
Numan, Radiohead, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Yazoo. u
SB How do you think a friend, or professor who knows you well
would describe you? Ian: Thoughtful, hardworking, impatient,
organized, obsessive, competitive. u SB What do you say to
people who say illustration isn’t really “Art”? Ian: I’d agree, it’s an
applied art more akin to design than art. But that’s not to say that
illustrators can’t make art. u SB What’s the best advice you’ve
ever been given? Ian: Run your own race. Measure twice cut
once. u SB What advice would you give to someone wanting to
get into illustration? Ian: Be prepared not to just sit there waiting
for the phone to ring, get involved, be proactive.
