interview with an illustrator
Matthew Hollings
Life, collecting records,
an obsessive personality
and the work of Hockney,
Steadman and Sasek, with
Springsteen playing in
the background . . .
u SB Do you have any formal design training? Matthew: Yes, I
spent three years at Camberwell College of Arts. u SB Where
is your studio? Matthew: I currently work from home but am
looking to move into a shared space before too long. u SB What
is your biggest inspiration? Matthew: Life. Progress/regress.
u SB Do you collect anything? Matthew: I have quite an
obsessive personality so yes I do collect things. Particularly
records, though I must confess this has slowed down during the
past few years due to the fact that most of the music I listen to
now is via an MP3 file. u SB Do you keep a scrapbook? Matthew:
Currently no, but I think I might start a digital one via the website
Ffffound. u SB Tell us about a favourite project you’ve recently
completed. Matthew: The album artwork for the band Monster’s
of Folk was a dream job for me. Not only have I always wanted
to do an album cover, it happened to be for a band I have a great
deal of respect for and one that I thoroughly enjoy listening to.
u SB Who are your art/illustration heroes? Matthew: David
