interview with an illustrator Paul Holland What inspires Paul Holland to create such powerful and enduring imagery? Paris, Pop Culture, and Leigh Bowery it seems. u SB Do you have any formal design training? Paul: Yes, after a foundation course in Leicester I completed a degree in Illustration at Kingston University. u SB You live in Paris. Does the city have an influence on your creativity? Paul: I’m sure living in a foreign country affects you in many ways, both consciously and subconsciously. I cannot think of how living in Paris has influenced my work in particular but it is most certainly a beautiful city to be surrounded by. u SB What is your biggest inspiration? Paul: Popular culture, the weird & wonderful, fashion, music and its lyrics. u SB Do you collect anything? Paul: I have an eye for flashy trainers, which I store away until the following year. I also like objects considered Kitsch/Pop as well as stationary. u SB Do you keep a scrapbook? Paul: No, not since being in education and purchasing an Apple G5, I’m a neat freak! I do realize the benefits though and can see how the computer has negatively affected the way in which an artist may work. u SB What is the first record you bought? Paul: I have no idea what this would have been. I did join Kylie’s fan club when she left 11
