Not surprisingly, the fad died out within a year in the US (although briefly surfacing in the form of Volkswagen stuffing a few years later.)
In 1924, a Hollywood stuntman started the dangerous sport of “flagpole sitting” when he sat on a pole for 13 hours and 13 minutes. He gained national fame and soon hundreds of people were trying to become the “King of the Pole.” The fad died out in 1929 with the Depression, but it certainly captivated the nation while it lasted.
