This magazine was the product of
months of work on the students’
parts. It started in February when we
star ted to learn about the
characteristics of feature articles by
studying a wide variety of them.
Students began brainstorming possible
topics to write about and then chose one.
Students then did extensive research in books and
on the internet. Then, they organized their research facts
by finding categories for similar facts. Students
used this
information to compose outlines and drafts.

As students continued to compose their drafts we started to draft
interview questions to pose to “experts” on the topic. Students
conducted interviews with a wide variety of people ranging from
relatives to college athletes to zoologists. This process gave students
an opportunity to practice another research tool as well as how to
incorporate direct and indirect quotes into their writing.
Once drafts were completed, students revised and edited them. They
used a checklist to help with this process.
Finally, students created this project. Students applied what they
learned about the characteristics of feature articles throughout the
process which led to the creation of this impressive magazine. We
hope you enjoy it. Happy reading!
