WIND UP, BRING DOWN, WHACK!
right forward are two of the forward
positions. Center forward is the
other forward position. Also, star
player Giorgiana Guenther on the
Huron field hockey team says, “ I
play right forward because I love
scoring goals.”
The Rules
Along with the equipment and the
positions, the rules in field hockey are
also similar to the rules in ice hockey
and soccer. A lot of the rules in field
hockey are meant to keep players from
getting hit with a stick or ball.
Whenever there is a foul, the other
team gets the ball. Like ice hockey,
raising the stick in a dangerous or
intimidating way is not allowed. Hitting,
hooking, or holding an opponent’s stick
is also against the rules. Unlike soccer,
stopping or deflecting the ball with any
part of the body besides the stick is not
allowed for field players. Field players
can only use their sticks to move the
ball.
Furthermore, there are rules
about shielding and blocking other
players from the ball. Shielding and
blocking other players from the ball,
also known as obstruction, is a foul, and
the opposing team gets the ball. If you
do very serious obstruction, you might
get a card. You would probably get a
green card.
Also, other field hockey rules
prohibit body contact. Checking and
hitting opponents is not allowed in field
hockey. Sometimes, the goalie or other
players collide by accident, but if it's an
accident, there is usually no foul. You
would probably get a yellow card for
doing this.
Like soccer and ice hockey,
repeated fouls will probably result in a
card from the referee. A player who
receives a card must leave the game.
For a green card, the player usually has
to sit out for two minutes. People
usually get a green card for hitting or
hooking a stick. For a yellow card, the
player usually has to leave for five
minutes. These are for making body
contact. For a red card, the player
normally sits out for the rest of the
game. People rarely get red cards, but
they are for extreme fouls.
Lastly, your game ended. Your

remember your team and coach. You
feel very upset that your team lost, but
you are still proud of the season you
and your team had. As you walk home,
you think, I guess field hockey really is
like soccer and ice hockey.
