Hunting, Helping Pets: Dogs at work
golden retriever, German
shepherd, dachshund, and beagle.
Fur thermore , the average
amount of time a dog will sleep
is 12 hours. A dog usually has six
puppies at a time but some can
have up to 12. In addition, if you
want a dog as a pet, your
backyard might smell like urine.
That may be because dogs mark
their territory with urine.
Similarly your dog might dig up
your flowers or yard because
they just want to cool off.
Maybe you should get a fan if
they do that! Besides, you might
think about getting a basenji.
Instead of barking they make a
singing sound.
All dogs are good but some fit
people better than others. Dogs
are part wolf. If you get a dog
make sure you have enough
time for it. Dogs need walks
regularly, so it is better if you
are fit. Big dogs cost more than
small dogs. Big dogs need more
food. Big dogs also have the
potential to knock you over.
Otherwise, if you want a dog
with a long tail, do not get a
Boston terrier or a bull dog.
They are born with short tails.
Make sure it is an experienced
breeder with a good record, if
you get one from a breeder.
HELPING DOGS
Dogs can help you in your
everyday life. So, if you are blind
or deaf, you can get a dog to
help you. The dogs are called
seeing eye dogs for the blind
and hearing dogs for the deaf. A
seeing dog can help you see. If a
seeing eye dog sees traffic
coming towards their owner,
they sit down in front of their
owner to stop them. A hearing

Doorbells, knocks, babies crying,
and alarm clocks ringing are all
something that a hearing dog
can alert his owner of by sitting
on you.
Also, dogs can help people who
are physically impaired. The
physically impaired include the
elderly, people
who have lost
limbs before, and

hospitals. In hospitals and
nursing homes, dogs can lift the
spirits of the patients and the
elderly. If your arms are
paralyzed, your dog can help
you. Your dog can leap up and
turn on lights for you. Your dog
can also open doors for you.
Last but not least, your dog can
give you the bag of doughnuts
after you buy them.
Similarly, dogs can help the
military and the police. When
the dogs work in the police
force, they mostly work after
natural disasters and at airports.
After natural disasters, dogs find
people buried in rubble. In
airports, dogs sniff out drugs
for the security. Dogs serve
many purposes in the army. Red
Cross dogs bring medical aid to
hurt soldiers. One dog helped
out a lot in the military. His
HUNTING WITH DOGS
Peter Kalikin lives in
Olmsted Falls, Ohio. He used
to hunt with a dog. Peter
says, “I hunted with an
English Springer Spaniel. This
dog is an excellent flushing
and retrieving dog and also a
great family dog. Hunting
with a Good dog saves me a
lot of walking and losing
birds in high grasses or deep
water.” Peter’s dogs were
named Luke and Sam. He
also says, “Luke hunted
pheasant, grouse and ducks.”
He did not comment on
what Sam hunted. Both dogs
have passed away.
