THE DEEP-SEA MONSTER
NANCY LIU
Have you ever seen an animal with 6 arms, 2
tentacles, that are 60 ft wide, and weigh 1,000
pounds? If you haven’t, it’s only because that they
are very rare.
The animal is called the giant squid, or what
scientists may call it, the genus Architeuthis. They
are one of the largest animals of the sea, that live
about 4,000 to 5,000 ft deep below the water.
Body Parts
This is the giant squid. There is also an
even larger squid, called the colossal squid.
The squid’s radula, is shown above. It can
shred the food giant squid eat.
Giant squid are very large animals that weigh a
lot. The amount of body parts they have relate to
their size and weight.
Giant squid have many body parts, and one of
them is the mantle. The mantle helps expel water,
which lets the squid move around in the water. It
measures about 7 feet in length. Another body
part they have is the radula, which hides near
their head. The radula is used to shred food. It
looks like the beak of a bird. The radula is similar
to a tongue but has teeth.
Close to the radula is the giant squid’s eyes. Its
eyes measure about 10 inches in diameter, which
is one of the biggest eyes in the animal kingdom.
The reason why it has big eyes allows it to have
great eyesight. Great eyesight helps them see in
the dark water deep below the ocean surface,
which can help them also catch food.
The arms and tentacles of the squid also help it
catch food. They have 10-foot long arms that
