hands in are the boxes
surrounding the goalposts. In that
box the goalkeeper is allowed to
use his hands and pick up, catch,
block, and steal the ball using his
hands. However, if the goalkeeper
uses his hands outside the box,
the opposing team is given a
penalty kick. Goalkeepers are also
allowed to go outside the box. they
just can't use his hands. Did you
know that goalkeepers can also
get red cards? Once on a team,
our goalkeeper got a red card for
slide tackling a player so their
coach had to get a defender and
sub him as a goalie. One of the
tallest defenders was put as the
goalkeeper. A free kick near a goal
puts the goalie under lots of
pressure which is why many
goalkeepers go to rage mode
when that happens.
A free kick of also known
as a foul can be awarded because
of many reasons. One reason a
foul is given is because some
other player got the dribbling
player’s back leg and made him
fall or trip. Another reason a foul is
rewarded is because of a slide
tackle to the player instead to the
ball. If there's one rule about slide
tackling that rule is to always touch
the ball before the player. The most
unsafe place to perform a slide
tackle is from behind the player
with the ball. In addition to that, yet
another way to get a free kick is by
running into a player on purpose
and making him fall. Many of the
consequences of doing these
things results in a red or yellow
card. A yellow card is warning. Two

William Mellors Blair
plays as a right
winger/forward for the
U of M men’s soccer
team. Lately I’ve been
wondering which shoe
brand people mostly
prefer. Blair said “I
grew up enjoying Nike
a lot, I used to wear
Nike Mercurial Vapors’
as my cleat of choice
and I really enjoyed
their gear. But I shifted
to Adidas at around
15/16 as I preferred the
Adidas Adizero. At
Michigan, we are an
Adidas sponsored
athletic department so
all our gear is Adidas,
and we cannot wear
any other brand apart
from Adidas.” Blair’s
said “ I like my position
because I have
opportunities to score
and I love scoring
more than anything.”
