Scovone Star Magazine 2013-2014 | Page 5

This magazine was the product of months of work on the students’ parts. It started in March when we started to learn about the characteristics of feature articles by studying a wide variety of them. Students began brainstorming possible topics to write about and then chose one. Students began composing drafts and found there were gaps in information that they needed to include, so this project slowly morphed into a research project. We went to the media center and began researching their questions. Students had to start their research in encyclopedias and books before using the internet. As students continued to compose their drafts we started to draft interview questions to pose to “experts” on the topic. Students conducted interviews with a wide variety of people ranging from relatives to team coaches to peers. This process gave students an opportunity to practice another research tool as well as how to incorporate direct and indirect quotes into their writing. Once drafts were completed, students revised and edited them. They used a checklist to help with this process. First, students edited their own writing. Afterwards, we had a teacher-student conference about their writing to make additional revisions. Finally, students created this final project. Students applied what they learned about the characteristics of feature articles throughout the process which led to the creation of this impressive magazine. We hope you enjoy it. Happy reading!
