The conclusion of the conference week was marked by a visit to the Sconce, the personal residence and armory of Col. and Mrs. Cooper. Every time I have had the good fortune to visit, I have learned something new, and this was no exception. After an introduction to the historical aspects of Col. Cooper and Gunsite by Mrs. Cooper, we were served refreshments, and much conversation ensued about Gunsite’s history, the Cooper family, Jeff Cooper’s teachings and other endeavors, the collection of various hunting trophies throughout the Sconce, historic photos, etc. We observed a number of historic rifles in the evolution of the scout rifle concept, recognizing all from Cooper’s writings over the years. Going into the armory is like a trip through a time machine, with many other interesting firearms on display. The adjacent library is filled with the works of authors we have all read, many in early editions.
