Some random observations/happenings from the event:
The weather at Gunsite was very dry and hot. Temps were typically 95-105F by the afternoon each day. Hydration was essential, along with good nutrition. Of course, proper clothing that protected one from the effects of being outside in the desert heat is totally necessary. Winds were sporadic, and in the afternoon blowing sand was a constant.
My selection of equipment for the week (all five days) was as follows: Three Ruger GSR rifles (one was brought for another participant), sixteen magazines (a mixture of factory steel, plastic, and a pair of Alpha brand examples), Leopold VXR 1.5-5 IER optics on two of the rifles, Andy’s Leather Rhodesian slings on two of the rifles, a Galco Safari Ching on the third rifle, two rifle magazine pouches on my duty belt, along with a Glock sidearm, extra pistol magazines, flashlight, folding knife, hydration pack, small first-aid kit, and small notepad. Ammunition for the week was six hundred rounds of my own custom .308 Winchester match loads, using Sierra 168 grain BTHP’s. I handled the sun exposure issue by wearing modified 511 brand pants, heavy long sleeve shirts, brimmed hats, and custom made sun shrouds that covered the back, sides, and front of my neck. Lots of sunscreen was applied several times each day to hands, face, etc. Lightweight desert boots provided insulation from the hot ground and blowing sand.
At Gunsite, safety is always stressed. I was pleased to see that this was adhered to by all the participants at all times. Rifles that were not being used were either slung properly or racked. I brought one of my own custom rifle racks as well; it collapses for transport and is designed to securely hold three long guns in gusty wind conditions.
