The most basic dish

is called “mămăligă” (polenta) and it is a sort of a porridge made of corn-flour. It is usually eaten with cheese and sour-cream on top. Also, when cold, the porridge becomes hard and it is sometimes eaten instead of bread.

“Sarmale”

is another traditional dish.

Although the origin of it is Turkish, the Romanian version is very different, having added a lot of spices. Basically sarmale are minced meat (usually pork) mixed with rice and a lot of spices and rolled in cabbage leaves. The rolls are then boiled, usually together with tomato broth and with smoked meat. They are usually served together with mămăligă and with some

sour-cream added on top.

“Tochitura”

is a stew made with

small pieces of pork, small pieces of sausage and

small pieces of bacon. It is served on top of mamaliga and with a fried egg and sour-cream on top.
